We will be more than happy to welcome you at one or more of our workshops. The workshops fill up quickly, so don’t hesitate to join.

Uaajeerneq (Grønlandsk maskedans)

Greenlandic mask dancing and clowning originate from the old Inuit religion. The dance contains the three basic elements of life; the joy, the menacing and the erotic. Uaajeerneq is deeply connected to the spirit world, the nature and the mystical. The mask dance and the drum dance have been linked since the dawn of time, and the ritual could sometimes be so intense that both mask dancers and spectators went into ecstasy.

In uaajeerneq, each individual dancer has their own unique mask and mouth stick. The mask is painted on and the stick sits crosswise in the mouth, distorting the face. The dancer must now, with movements, the voice and humor, seduce and frighten hisor her audience. Uaajeerneq always contains a clown element and there is a strong interaction between the mask dancer and the audience.

At the workshop, the participants will get to know the history and traditions behind the uaajeerneq. Participants will make their own mouth sticks and develop their own painted face. In addition, everyone will try to scare, seduce and clown and practice the dance itself on the floor.

Connie Kristoffersen was born and raised in Greenland. She is a trained actor from The National Acting School of Greenland 2016. Since 2014, Connie has performed as a mask dancer and given countless uaajeerneq workshops both in and outside Greenland. She has appeared in various plays, TV series and films. In addition, she can also write TV and podcast host, festival manager and teacher at The Commedia School on her CV.

Price: DKK 2.650 (Euro 350)

There are only 12 places, which are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is binding.

HUMAN VOICE

The workshop will focus on physical exercises to prepare the body for using the voice and seeking the dynamic sources of sounds as well as research into and development of the unique vocal potential of each participant. The link between the voice and movement will be emphasized.
The work also involves attentive listening to one self and to others. This requires concentration and capacity to identify with other people’s efforts. In this way we support each other’s progress during both individual and group work. There is allocated individual time for each participant within the group.
Ulrik Barfod work is built around the respect for each person’s expression. There is a clear focus on the already existing connection between voice and movement. His listening and observation of the participants, the relationship to time which each is confronted with and his soft determination is highly appreciated by the students. We all must find the sources of creativity within ourselves – not from others. Each person is unique and the deepest master of oneself. The work covers physical and vocal warm-up, improvisation classes but the spin of the work is the master class where the student works solo with Ulrik in the presence of the rest of the group. To create a respectful and safe atmosphere to work in which gives strength and trust in oneself. Concepts like good/bad, right/wrong, beautiful/ugly etc. gets turned around and looked upon and understood in a different way. The greatest appreciation of his work is his unconditional respect and belief in all people. Physical movements help liberate the voice by giving inspiration to move to somewhere, awakens the imagination and helps us to physically feel who we are and what we want to ‘say’ rather than to try and understand ourselves intellectually.
Ulrik Barfod is a teacher and member of the Roy Hart Theatre and directs voice workshops all over the world.
