Theatre without boundaries!

Object theatre

All theatre is visual, and most theatre tends to have some objects. Props and objects have always been a part of theatrical experience – however, “object theatre” gives the props an active and dramatic role, and becomes a playground where everything is possible, an entrance to a dreamlike world where nothing is what it seems.

There is not one right, preferable or proper way in object theatre. “It is true that all puppets are objects, but all objects are not puppets” (Henryk Jurkowski). In object and puppet theatre nothing is impossible –  universes can be created, or exploded!, characters can fly, hearts can be literally bound together, you can change heads with your partner, have animals or even furniture perform the main roles – whatever your imagination offers – everything and anything becomes possible, and we as an audience easily love the enchantment.

With visual object theatre we may also find and make theatre where it is not traditionally found or made. We need not follow a ready script, but are free to chase any impulse. Visual theatre, and puppets too, can be very big or very small – they can be performed close to the public, even on the hand of the audience, or from a far distance. Theatre can be custom-made for all kind of spaces, events or environments, or performed impulsively anywhere – as well as in classical theatres. The “telling” doesn’t need to lean on text but comes through strong visual atmospheres, choices, amounts and use of objects. Thus, it is also very universally understood by people of different backgrounds, languages, ages and cultures.

Visual theatre opens doors for the unexpected – you can create your own performances, enchant with atmospheres and inventiveness, you can even build your own performers! Hundreds of them, if need be.The study of Puppetry and Performing Objects in the Commedia School teaches you a fresh way of looking, seeing and creating – which will enrich your work in theatre, in whatever style you want to do.
