HUMAN VOICE directed by voice coach Ulrik Barfod 14 -18. June 2021

The workshop will focus on physical exercises to prepare the body for using the voice and seeking the dynamic sources of sounds as well as research into and development of the unique vocal potential of each participant. The link between the voice and movement will be emphasized.
The work also involves attentive listening to one self and to others. This requires concentration and capacity to identify with other people’s efforts. In this way we support each other’s progress during both individual and group work. There is allocated individual time for each participant within the group.
Ulrik Barfod work is built around the respect for each person’s expression. There is a clear focus on the already existing connection between voice and movement. His listening and observation of the participants, the relationship to time which each is confronted with and his soft determination is highly appreciated by the students. We all must find the sources of creativity within ourselves – not from others. Each person is unique and the deepest master of oneself. The work covers physical and vocal warm-up, improvisation classes but the spin of the work is the master class where the student works solo with Ulrik in the presence of the rest of the group. To create a respectful and safe atmosphere to work in which gives strength and trust in oneself. Concepts like good/bad, right/wrong, beautiful/ugly etc. gets turned around and looked upon and understood in a different way. The greatest appreciation of his work is his unconditional respect and belief in all people. Physical movements help liberate the voice by giving inspiration to move to somewhere, awakens the imagination and helps us to physically feel who we are and what we want to ‘say’ rather than to try and understand ourselves intellectually.
Ulrik Barfod is a sought-after voice instructor all over Europe. Ulrik Barfod’s background is in music, which he studied at University of Aarhus in Denmark. He was a professional chorister during his studies in Denmark and France. He performed as a voice artist with the Roy Hart Theatre, and then as a soloist. He started teaching voice in the 1990s and was a voice coach for numerous solo performances and theatre productions, as well as at The State Theatre School of Germany.
Ulrik Barfod is a teacher and member of the Roy Hart Theatre and directs voice workshops all over the world.

Clown and Storytelling 2021

Due to Danish Corona restrictions, The Commedia School has to push the start till the 1. March 2021

Storytelling

The students will discover the fundamental nature of theatre, telling stories whether literary and verbal or gestural and non-verbal. By telling stories, the students learn to connect in a profound way with the public and develop the sensitivity necessary to hold the audience attention and take them on a journey through the story. Everyone loves a charming story, and in this section of study the students discover their own unique charm while creating their own stories. This style of telling stories draws on the student’s creativity physically building images using movement, pantomime, acrobatics, and voice working individually and in groups. Many theatre groups have launched their careers in this style.

The Clown – the art of failing

As the students encounter the phenomena of the clown, they develop a freedom of play while discovering their comic character, their unique way of making people laugh. Working with the solitude of the clown provides them a sense of being centered in themselves on stage and in touch with their immediate circumstances. They develop the ability to play with the surprises that invariably occur during performances. Working with the naiveté of the clown exposes each student to the basic human condition and their own vulnerability. They discover that their personal vulnerability is what makes them interesting on stage. During this study, the students will have several opportunities to perform their clown numbers and shows with diverse audiences in Denmark and abroad.
The study includes wareness through movement, the play, mime and acrobatics.
This is an exciting and intense three-month study that will profoundly develop those wanting to work in theatre and expand the skills of those already involved in theatre.

Commedia school module 1, 2021

The first module begins on October first, 2021, this year, and includes the basic developmental classes upon which all the succeeding studies are based: Awareness through movement, the play, mime, the importance of mask play in the development of the actor, mask making, and acrobatics. This module ends with a mask performance resulting from the study of many different masks each with their specific importance to the actor.

Masks teach the student awareness and control of the movement and gesture. The masks demand that the student becomes aware of the essential gestures as well as aware of those not essential and thus distracting. The mask enlarges the performer to a higher level of projection and playing. The module includes an intensive one-week mask making workshop with master mask makers gives the students experience designing and constructing their own mask.

This is an exciting and intense three-month study that will profoundly develop those wanting to work in theatre and expand the skills of those already involved in theatre.
